The final auditions for Australia’s vacant batting spot will be a key focus during the second four-day A-team match at the MCG. Quick bowler Scott Boland is seizing the chance to challenge India Test squad member KL Rahul, who has arrived early to play for India A.

Rahul, who averaged just 20.77 in five Tests in Australia, played the first Test against New Zealand but then made way for Shubman Gill’s return. He and reserve wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel left India ahead of the main Test squad to gain match experience against Australia A. If Rohit Sharma misses the first Test in Perth for personal reasons, Rahul may be in contention, prompting Boland to aim for an impactful performance.
Boland recalled bowling to Rahul during a Test in India, expressing his eagerness to face him on home soil. He noted that while Rahul is a world-class player, he believes they can dominate him early in the series. Despite India’s recent 3-0 defeat to New Zealand, Boland urged caution in interpreting that loss, pointing out the unique conditions in Australia that differ from those in India.
Most of India’s Test squad won’t have a full game before the first Test, as an intra-squad match was changed to match simulation for better preparation. Rohit Sharma explained that the team felt this approach would allow batters to spend more time in the middle without the constraints of a practice game.
Boland, who averages 12.21 in home Tests, is likely to be a reserve quick in the Test squad and aims to capitalize on any opportunity that arises, especially given the injury challenges faced by other players. After recovering from a heel injury, he expressed excitement about returning to the field, looking forward to contributing to the team this summer.
