Hardik Pandya makes a comeback to professional cricket through participation in the DY Patil T20 Cup

Hardik Pandya has marked his return to competitive cricket, ending a hiatus since sustaining an ankle injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup. His comeback was showcased in the DY Patil T20 Cup held in Navi Mumbai, where he represented Reliance 1. Opening the bowling, Hardik Pandya showcased his prowess by claiming 2 wickets for 22 runs in his three overs. Additionally, he contributed with the bat at No. 10, aiding in a tense chase alongside Piyush Chawla, remaining unbeaten on 3 runs off four balls as Reliance 1 clinched victory against Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited by two wickets.

Over the past two months, Hardik Pandya has been diligently working towards regaining full fitness. Following his rehabilitation, he resumed training in Baroda three weeks ago and recently participated in three practice T20s organized by the NCA in Alur alongside Rishabh Pant. After demonstrating both batting and bowling skills in these matches, Pandya received clearance from the NCA to participate in the DY Patil tournament.

In early March, Hardik Pandya will undergo a final fitness assessment at the NCA before he joins the Mumbai Indians’ pre-season camp for IPL 2024, which begins on March 22. Notably, Hardik Pandya will assume the captaincy of Mumbai Indians, succeeding Rohit Sharma, following significant negotiations post the World Cup, which led to the most extensive player trade in IPL history.

High Anticipation Surrounds DY Patil Tournament

The DY Patil tournament will also feature prominent players such as Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shreyas Iyer. Suryakumar Yadav is making a comeback post-surgery for sports hernia in Germany, while Kishan and Iyer’s absence from the Ranji Trophy has attracted attention, despite BCCI directives urging contracted players to prioritize domestic cricket over IPL commitments.

Kishan, last seen playing for India in December, opted out of the Test squad in South Africa due to personal reasons and hasn’t participated in red-ball cricket since. Meanwhile, Iyer’s situation is peculiar; following his omission from the Indian squad due to modest performances and subsequent back spasms, he skipped Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Baroda. If Iyer remains fit, he is ready to lead his IPL franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, after recovering from a back injury that required surgery.
