Mumbai Indians’ skipper Hardik Pandya found himself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons as he was fined Rs 24 lakh following his team’s second slow over-rate offence in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during their recent match against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow. This decision came after Mumbai Indians lost the match by four wickets at the Ekana Stadium on Tuesday.
The IPL released a statement addressing the issue, indicating that Pandya’s fine was a consequence of his team’s failure to maintain an adequate over-rate during Match 48 of the TATA IPL 2024. This was Mumbai Indians’ second such offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct concerning minimum over-rate offences.
In addition to Pandya’s hefty fine, all other members of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, faced individual fines. These fines amounted to either Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, depending on which amount was lesser.

The slow over-rate issue is a matter of concern for teams in cricket, as it not only disrupts the flow of the game but also incurs penalties as per the regulations set by the governing bodies.
Maintaining a proper over-rate is crucial for the smooth conduct of matches and to ensure that both teams have a fair chance to complete their innings within the allotted time.
While Pandya’s leadership role makes him accountable for the team’s overall performance on the field, it’s worth noting that a slow over-rate often involves collective responsibility. Each player has a role to play in maintaining the pace of the game, and failure to do so can result in financial penalties, as demonstrated in this instance.
As Mumbai Indians aim to bounce back from this setback and regain momentum in the tournament, they will need to address their over-rate issues and ensure that they adhere to the IPL’s regulations in their future matches.
