Gautam Gambhir has recently taken on the role of head coach for Team India, succeeding notable predecessors Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri. Acknowledging the substantial legacy left by his predecessors, Gambhir emphasized his commitment to upholding the team’s high standards.

“These are big shoes to fill,” Gambhir remarked during a press conference in Mumbai on Monday. He expressed his excitement about leading a highly successful team, noting their impressive performances, including being runners-up in the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup. “I aim to create a happy and secure dressing room. I am taking over a very successful team, and I am looking forward to the challenge,” he added.
To support him, Gambhir will have Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches. Gambhir has previously worked with both during the IPL with KKR and believes their professionalism will be a great asset to the Indian team. “They are consummate professionals, and I am hopeful they will contribute to a successful stint with the Indian team,” he said.
Gambhir steps into the role following Rahul Dravid’s tenure, which concluded with India’s dramatic seven-run victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, ending a 17-year wait for the trophy. Gambhir’s first major task will be the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, which includes T20Is and ODIs. Furthermore, this tour will begin on July 27.
