Former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has emerged as the sole candidate to apply for the prestigious position of India’s head coach. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had called for applications after the current head coach, Rahul Dravid, expressed his desire not to continue beyond the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.

Following the deadline on May 27, Gambhir stands as the lone applicant for one of the most sought-after roles in international cricket.
The vacancy for the India head coach position opened up when Dravid, who assumed the role in 2021, opted against seeking an extension due to the taxing travel schedule. Dravid’s tenure witnessed numerous highlights, including guiding the team to the finals of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2023.
Gambhir’s candidacy for the head coach position follows his successful coaching tenure with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.
Under his guidance, KKR secured their third IPL title, ending a ten-year drought. Gambhir’s ability to foster a positive team culture and his strategic acumen have earned widespread acclaim, positioning him as a strong contender for the national team role.
According to reports from Hindustan Times, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik, will conduct a virtual interview with Gambhir on Tuesday, June 18, via Zoom. Their recommendations will then be presented to the BCCI for the official appointment.
The scarcity of applicants for the India head coach position underscores the demanding nature of the role, which entails extensive travel and a grueling schedule. Many high-profile coaches and former players have opted for shorter stints in franchise leagues, which offer lucrative compensation and a more balanced work-life equilibrium.
