The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) concluded its highly anticipated “connection camp” on Monday, aiming to address the current challenges facing the national team. During the camp, officials and team management, including head coaches Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten, engaged in open discussions regarding a perceived lack of unity within the squad. Key players, including captains Shan Masood and Babar Azam, participated in these conversations.

Pakistan cricket is experiencing one of its most challenging phases, marked by a series of disappointing results, including losses to Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup, the USA in the T20 World Cup, and a 2-0 defeat in a home Test series against Bangladesh. Speculation about rifts within the team has circulated, especially following the swift changes in leadership with Shaheen Shah Afridi’s appointment and subsequent removal as T20I captain.
Salman Naseer, PCB’s chief operating officer, acknowledged the discussions focused not only on team cohesion but also on the relationship between the board and players. “We openly identified issues and sought commitments to improve our performances and teamwork,” Naseer stated at a press conference in Lahore. He emphasized the importance of providing a safe environment for open dialogue.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Gillespie and Kirsten expressed optimism about the talent pool in Pakistan cricket. Kirsten highlighted the quality of players showcased during the Champions Cup, while Gillespie noted the players’ pride in representing their country. The camp aimed to foster unity and collaboration as Pakistan prepares for its upcoming Test series against England.
