Dane van Niekerk set for South Africa return after reversing retirement decision

Former South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk is set for an international comeback after being named in South Africa’s training squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup.

Dane van Niekerk set for South Africa return after reversing retirement decisionVan Niekerk retired in March 2023 after missing the home T20 World Cup due to Cricket South Africa’s strict fitness criteria. She last played international cricket in September 2021 and also missed the 2022 ODI World Cup after breaking her ankle. Though she was expected to return in early 2023, she failed to complete the mandatory two-kilometre run under 9:30. CSA have since relaxed their fitness policy, allowing coaches greater discretion in selections.

Over the past season, van Niekerk played a full campaign for Western Province, scoring 179 runs in five 50-over matches and excelling in the Pro20, where she finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer. Recently, she confirmed her availability for international cricket. In an Instagram post, she announced her decision to revoke her retirement, admitting she missed representing South Africa and apologising for the way she handled her exit. She also committed to meeting the required standards of the women’s game.

Her middle-order batting and legspin could be key for South Africa, who have struggled in those areas. Laura Wolvaardt will lead the side at the World Cup, though she, Marizanne Kapp, and Chloe Tryon are unavailable for this week’s training camp due to commitments in The Hundred.

The 19-player camp in Durban will help finalise the 15-member World Cup squad. Young allrounder Luyanda Nzuza, the only uncapped player, joins experienced names like Tazmin Brits, Ayabonga Khaka, and Nonkululeko Mlaba. The squad will also play three ODIs in Pakistan from September 16-22 before the World Cup begins.
