On Sunday, October 20, 2024, New Zealand cricket star Suzie Bates made history by surpassing India’s legendary Mithali Raj to become the most capped player in women’s cricket. Bates achieved this remarkable milestone during the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 final at the Dubai International Stadium, marking her 334th international appearance.

Mithali Raj, who retired after the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup, had held the record with 333 international matches over her distinguished 23-year career. Bates, now 37, officially surpassed Raj when she took the field for New Zealand in the final against South Africa.
Since her international debut in 2006 at the age of 19, Bates has been a crucial part of the White Ferns, representing New Zealand in 163 ODIs and 171 T20Is. Her nearly two-decade-long career has cemented her status as one of the game’s greats. In the list of most capped players in women’s cricket, Bates is joined by other legends like Ellyse Perry (322 matches) and Harmanpreet Kaur (316 matches), both of whom are still active.
During the 2024 T20 World Cup, Bates showcased her skill and leadership, playing in all six matches and scoring 150 runs, making her the joint top-scorer for New Zealand. She also contributed with the ball, taking a crucial wicket in the semifinal victory over West Indies.
In the final, New Zealand defeated South Africa by 32 runs to win their first Women’s T20 World Cup title. Bates, in addition to becoming the most capped player, also became the oldest player in tournament history to win the title, further solidifying her legacy as one of the all-time greats in women’s cricket.
