South Africa Faces Setback as David Miller Gets Injured Before Champions Trophy

South Africa’s preparations for the 2025 Champions Trophy have taken a hit with injuries to key players David Miller and Lungi Ngidi. Both cricketers suffered injuries during the ongoing SA20 2025 season while playing for their respective teams.

South Africa Faces Setback as David Miller Gets Injured Before Champions Trophy

David Miller, representing Paarl Royals, sustained a groin injury during a match against Durban’s Super Giants. The injury occurred while he attempted to stop the ball in the 14th over. The severity of the injury forced him to leave the field immediately, and he did not return to bat in the run chase. Despite his absence, the Royals comfortably chased down the target in 19.5 overs, winning by six wickets. Miller described the injury as a “little tweak” to his right groin, adding that he had hoped to leave the field before it worsened. Although the injury does not appear serious, the South African team will be closely monitoring his fitness, given that the Champions Trophy is less than a month away.

Lungi Ngidi, also dealing with a groin injury, is in recovery. His coach at Paarl Royals, Trevor Penney, provided an update, explaining that Ngidi, being a fast bowler, needs extra time to return to full fitness. Ngidi had been sidelined for eight weeks due to the injury, but he is now on a recovery program and nearing full fitness. Penney is confident that Ngidi will be ready for action when the team moves to the Highveld for upcoming matches.

These injuries add to the growing list of setbacks for South Africa, which also includes the absence of Anrich Nortje and the recent return of Gerald Coetzee from injury. The Proteas are facing tough challenges as they prepare for the Champions Trophy.
