Sri Lanka’s left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama has been banned by the ICC from all forms of cricket for one year, with the final six months of the ban suspended. The penalty follows Jayawickrama’s admission to violating the ICC’s anti-corruption code.

Jayawickrama receives one-year ban for violating anti-corruption rules

In August, Jayawickrama faced two charges, including a breach of article 2.4.7. This article pertains to obstructing or delaying investigations conducted by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit (ACU). Specifically, it involves concealing, tampering with, or destroying documents or information that could be crucial to the investigation or serve as evidence of corrupt activities under the anti-corruption code. Jayawickrama’s involvement in international cricket and the Lanka Premier League (LPL) led to the charges against him.

Jayawickrama made his international debut for Sri Lanka in April 2021, playing in a Test against Bangladesh. Since then, he has represented Sri Lanka in five Tests, five ODIs, and five T20Is. His last appearance for the national team was during a T20I series at home against Australia in 2022.

In the LPL, Jayawickrama was part of the Jaffna Kings squad that won the 2021 title, where he took two wickets in one match. In the 2024 edition, he played for Dambulla Sixers. The ICC will enforce the first six months of Jayawickrama’s ban, but he could return to cricket sooner if he complies with the regulations.
