Sam Curran has expressed disappointment at missing out on a Test recall following Ben Stokes’ hamstring injury this summer. Although named Player of the Final and Tournament during England’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2022, Curran’s international career is at a crossroads. At 26, he feels uncertain about his role in England’s white-ball setup and senses he doesn’t quite “fit the mould” for Brendon McCullum’s Test team.

Despite his knack for contributing to victories in his 24 Tests, Curran hasn’t featured in any of the 30 Tests since McCullum took charge. He believes his physical limitations—standing at 5’9″ and bowling medium pace—may be a factor, especially as England looks for high-pace bowlers like Josh Hull, who made his Test debut recently.
Curran admitted he was “gutted” to miss out on a call-up after Stokes’ injury and met with Rob Key to discuss his Test future. However, England prioritized specific skills and extra pace, leading to his exclusion. He acknowledges that selection depends on fitting the current team structure, and there’s little he can do but perform for his county and franchises.
The upcoming white-ball tour of the Caribbean presents an opportunity for Curran to showcase his skills. With several multi-format players absent, he hopes to take a central role. He remains determined to prove his worth and aims to secure a spot in future Test series, an Ashes tour, or a Champions Trophy victory by scoring runs and taking wickets.
