Rubel Hossain retires from international cricket

Rubel Hossain, one of Bangladesh’s well-known fast bowlers, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 36. Sharing the news with his 3.5 million followers on Facebook, Rubel confirmed the end of a career that spanned 159 international appearances for Bangladesh national cricket team.

Rubel last represented Bangladesh in April 2021 during a T20I against New Zealand national cricket team in Auckland. In recent years, injuries have limited his involvement, both internationally and in domestic cricket.

He will be best remembered for his standout performance against England national cricket team in the 2015 World Cup in Adelaide. In that match, Rubel delivered a match-winning spell, dismissing key players like Ian Bell and Eoin Morgan in quick succession, finishing with figures of 4 for 53 and securing a historic win for Bangladesh.

In his farewell message, Rubel expressed gratitude to his supporters and confirmed that while his international journey has ended, he plans to continue playing domestic cricket. He thanked his family, friends, media, and fans for their constant support.

Rubel’s journey began in 2009 when he was spotted during a fast-bowling talent hunt led by coach Champaka Ramanayake. Known for his slingy action and pace touching 140 km/h, he quickly made an impact. He impressed on his ODI debut with 4 for 33 against Sri Lanka national cricket team.

While he had modest success in Tests, Rubel excelled in ODIs, claiming 129 wickets and becoming one of Bangladesh’s top wicket-takers. His contributions leave behind a memorable legacy in Bangladesh cricket.
