Heather Knight has stepped down as England Women’s captain after nine years, following Jon Lewis’s departure as head coach. Knight, 34, led England in 199 matches and leaves after a review of England’s 16-0 Women’s Ashes defeat to Australia earlier this year. England had also faced disappointment with a group-stage exit at the T20 World Cup in October. Despite stepping down, Knight remains available for England selection.

Successful Tenure and Achievements
Knight took over as captain in June 2016 after Charlotte Edwards’ removal. She led England to a historic World Cup triumph at Lord’s in 2017 and guided them to two more ICC finals in 2018 and 2022. However, recent struggles prompted the ECB to move in a different direction. Her successor will be announced soon.
Praise from ECB Leadership
Clare Connor, ECB managing director of England Women, praised Knight’s contributions. Connor highlighted her leadership on and off the field, particularly recalling her fighting century in the 2022 Ashes Test at Canberra. She credited Knight for inspiring young girls and driving the growth of women’s cricket since 2016.
Knight Reflects on Her Journey
Knight expressed her pride in leading the team for nine years, calling it the greatest honour of her career. She cherished the 2017 World Cup win but also valued her role in advancing women’s cricket. She thanked coaches Mark Robinson, Lisa Keightley, and Jon Lewis, along with her teammates, support staff, and fans. She also acknowledged the unwavering support of her family and partner, Tim.
Focus on Batting and Future Contributions
Knight now looks forward to focusing on her batting and supporting the team and the next captain. Her career milestones include being the first England player, male or female, to score an international century in all three formats.
Richard Gould Appreciates Knight’s Legacy
ECB CEO Richard Gould praised Knight for her lasting influence on and off the pitch. He acknowledged her contribution to transforming women’s cricket and expressed confidence that Knight would continue to excel as one of the world’s best batters for years to come.
