“This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level,” Ashwin stated during a press conference. While expressing a desire to continue playing club cricket, he confirmed his decision to step away from international cricket. Reflecting on his journey, Ashwin said, “I’ve had a lot of fun and created many memories alongside teammates like Rohit Sharma and others. We’re the last bunch of OGs left in the dressing room.”

Gratitude for Team and Coaches

Ashwin extended his gratitude to the BCCI, his teammates, and coaches, particularly highlighting contributions from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara, who took remarkable catches to aid his wicket tally over the years.

Rohit Sharma’s Support

Rohit Sharma, seated beside Ashwin, expressed support for his decision, emphasizing the personal nature of such choices. “A player like Ashwin, who has contributed so much to Indian cricket, deserves the respect to make his own decision. The team fully backs him,” Rohit said.

Ashwin’s Legacy in Test Cricket

Ashwin retires as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 537 wickets at an average of 24 in 106 matches. He is surpassed only by Anil Kumble’s 619 wickets. Additionally, Ashwin contributed significantly with the bat, scoring 3503 runs, including six centuries and 14 fifties. His all-round prowess placed him among an elite group of players with over 3000 runs and 300 wickets in Tests.

Record Player-of-the-Series Achievements

Ashwin also claimed a record 11 Player-of-the-Series awards, equaling Muttiah Muralitharan. Despite limited appearances in India’s overseas fixtures recently, his contributions remain unparalleled, leaving a lasting legacy in Indian cricket.
