Carey’s Stellar Form Challenges Australia’s Wicketkeeping Options Ahead of Champions Trophy

Alex Carey’s impressive return to Australia’s ODI team is creating a selection dilemma ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy, according to coach and selector Andrew McDonald. Carey returned to the ODI team at the start of the series against England after the selectors dropped him during last year’s ODI World Cup. He filled in for Josh Inglis, who missed the match due to a quad injury sustained in the T20I series.

Strong Performance Raises Questions

Carey's Stellar Form Challenges Australia's Wicketkeeping Options Ahead of Champions Trophy

Since his return, Carey has excelled with back-to-back scores of 74 and 77 not out, helping Australia recover from challenging positions at Headingley and Chester-le-Street. His performance raises questions about whether Inglis will automatically reclaim his spot once fit. McDonald acknowledged that having two strong wicketkeeping options presents a “good problem,” emphasizing the healthy competition for places within the team.

Potential for Dual Wicketkeepers

There’s also a possibility that both players could feature in the same lineup. They have previously played together in six ODIs, with Inglis often acting as a specialist batter while Carey kept wickets. However, this scenario may be less likely when all players are fit. Instead, Australia might opt for an extra allrounder, a strategy McDonald has been keen on since taking over as coach in 2022.

Allrounder Options

Aaron Hardie has emerged as a strong candidate for this role, demonstrating his ability with an impressive 44 runs from 26 balls in a recent match. Hardie’s allround capabilities, combined with those of Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, and others, provide Australia with various options as they aim to finalize their squad for major tournaments.

Despite the depth in their batting, Australia must remain cautious of relying too heavily on an allrounder-heavy lineup, which may lack the potency needed against top competition. The return of key players like Adam Zampa and Travis Head for the final two ODIs will be crucial for Australia as they navigate these selection challenges.
