The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has declined Gautam Gambhir’s recommendations for key coaching positions within the Indian cricket team. Gautam Gambhir, recently appointed as Team India’s head coach following Rahul Dravid’s departure after the 2024 T20 World Cup, advocated for Jonty Rhodes as the fielding coach and Vinay Kumar as the bowling coach. However, the BCCI rejected both suggestions.

BCCI Turns Down Gambhir's Suggestion for Rhodes as Fielding Coach; Dilip Set to Stay

Traditionally, the BCCI allows the head coach to select their support staff. Despite this policy, the board did not approve Gambhir’s choices. Gambhir advocated for Rhodes, a legendary South African cricketer renowned for his exceptional fielding skills, and Kumar, a former Indian cricketer with coaching experience, but the BCCI did not endorse them.

Gautam Gambhir and Jonty Rhodes previously collaborated during their tenure at the Lucknow Super Giants franchise. The decision marks a setback for Gambhir’s initial efforts to shape his coaching team for Team India.

Gambhir’s first major assignment as head coach will be overseeing India’s upcoming limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled between July and August. His tenure begins amidst changes in the coaching setup, including the departures of batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T. Dilip following Dravid’s exit.
