Third umpire assigned for every WBBL match, with more DRS usage

For the first time, every game in the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) will feature a third umpire, with an increase in matches using the full Decision Review System (DRS) for its tenth season. This comes after previous seasons saw several controversial line decisions, frustrating players and prompting the implementation of improved TV umpiring technology.

A total of 33 out of the 43 matches will have full DRS coverage. For the 10 matches without it, the TV umpire will still be able to rule on critical line decisions such as stumpings and run-outs. Of the 33 matches with DRS, Seven will broadcast 23, and Fox Sports will cover another 10, thanks to the increase in fully produced matches. This means 77% of games will have full DRS, compared to 41% last season.

Additionally, an innings timer will be introduced to mirror the rules of the BBL. Teams will have 73 minutes to bowl the first ball of the 20th over. If they fail to meet this time requirement, they will face a fielding penalty, with one extra fielder required to stay inside the circle.

Alistair Dobson, head of the Big Bash Leagues, emphasized the importance of these changes: “A world-class competition demands world-class technology and innovation. Expanding DRS coverage and introducing the Innings Timer improves the viewing experience and ensures greater fairness for players and umpires alike.”

The tenth season of the WBBL kicks off on October 27 with a triple-header, starting with defending champions Adelaide Strikers facing Brisbane Heat at Adelaide Oval.
