Mumbai Indians (MI) secured their first win of IPL 2025 with a commanding eight-wicket victory over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Wankhede Stadium. This win extended MI’s dominance over KKR at home, improving their record to 10-2. The star of the night was debutant Ashwani Kumar, who delivered a stunning spell of 4 for 24—the best figures by an Indian on IPL debut—to bowl KKR out for just 116.
Ashwani’s Dream Debut

The 23-year-old pacer, who had played only four T20s before this match, was visibly nervous before his debut, even skipping lunch. However, he showed no signs of pressure once he got the ball in hand. His IPL journey began in spectacular fashion, as he dismissed KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane with his very first ball. He went on to remove Rinku Singh and Andre Russell, proving his ability to challenge top-class batters.
What set apart was his control over length and smart variations. Despite bowling at speeds in the early-to-mid 130kph range—typically easy pickings in the IPL—KKR batters struggled to dominate him. Rinku fell trying to attack him, misjudging a length change and getting caught at deep point. Russell, too, attempted an aggressive approach but was first beaten by a sharp bouncer and then bowled by a well-placed 140kph full delivery. Ashwani’s impressive performance built on his success in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 Trophy, where he thrived in pressure situations.
Boult and Chahar Rattle KKR Early
While Ashwani stole the spotlight, MI’s bowling dominance started with Trent Boult. The left-arm pacer continued his remarkable ability to strike in the first over, knocking over Sunil Narine’s stumps for his 30th first-over wicket in IPL history. Deepak Chahar followed up by forcing Quinton de Kock into a miscue that led to a simple mid-off catch.
Despite their early losses, KKR remained aggressive, knowing that Wankhede favors chasers. However, their approach backfired as they lost wickets at regular intervals, leaving Russell and Ramandeep Singh as their last recognized batters.
Rickelton Steadies the Chase
Ryan Rickelton had a nervous start, missing his first four deliveries. His first boundary came via an inside edge, while his first six was a top edge. However, with only 117 to chase, he had time to settle. A crisp straight drive off Harshit Rana boosted his confidence, and he soon found his rhythm.
Rickelton reached his half-century with a six off Sunil Narine and remained unbeaten as Suryakumar Yadav sealed the victory with another six. Rohit Sharma, however, struggled again, scoring only 13, raising further concerns about his form.
MI’s Statement Win
With a dominant bowling display and a composed chase, MI sent a strong message in IPL 2025. Ashwani’s debut heroics, Boult’s early breakthrough, and Rickelton’s calm innings ensured a comfortable win, giving MI momentum for the rest of the tournament.
