BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has refuted claims that the board has approached any former Australian cricketers for the position of India’s next head coach. Shah emphasized the importance of the candidate having a deep understanding of Indian cricket’s structure, hinting that the successor to Rahul Dravid could likely be Indian.
Despite reports suggesting otherwise, Shah clarified, “Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer.” He emphasized that finding the right coach for the national team is a meticulous process, focusing on individuals with a profound understanding of Indian cricket and its domestic structure.
The criteria for the next coach will include in-depth knowledge of Indian domestic cricket, which Shah believes is crucial for elevating Team India to the next level. While there have been links between former Australian cricketers like Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer and the position, Shah’s statement dismisses such speculations.
Ponting had earlier revealed that he was approached for the role but decline due to personal reasons, including commitments to his family and IPL involvement. Langer, too, expressed interest but acknowledged the immense pressure associated with coaching India, citing advice from KL Rahul about the intensity of the role.
Shah described the position of India’s head coach as the “most prestigious job” in international cricket, highlighting the demands it places on professionalism and the honor of nurturing some of the best cricketers in the world. The BCCI remains committed to selecting the right candidate capable of propelling Indian cricket forward.
