Babar Azam expected to remain Pakistan captain despite T20 World Cup 2024 performance

Under the leadership of Babar Azam, Pakistan had a notable run in previous T20 World Cups, reaching the semi-finals in 2021 and the finals in 2022. However, their performance in the current T20 World Cup 2024 has been disappointing under his captaincy. The team suffered defeats against the United States of America and India before securing a victory over Canada. Their chances of advancing in the tournament hinge on India winning their remaining match and USA losing decisively.

Babar Azam expected to remain Pakistan captain despite T20 World Cup 2024 performance

Following Babar Azam’s reinstatement as white-ball captain ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, despite his team’s lackluster showing, reports suggest that the PCB is likely to retain him as captain. Despite failing to secure silverware in previous tournaments, the team underwent significant structural changes during his tenure.

After Pakistan’s defeat to India on June 9, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi called for substantial changes in Pakistan cricket, describing the situation as necessitating “major surgery.” This statement followed Pakistan’s unexpected loss to USA, which was considered a significant upset in the country’s cricketing history. Naqvi hinted at potential leadership adjustments but emphasized that consultations are ongoing and declined further comment at this time.

“The team needed minor surgery to turn things around, but now it seems we must undertake major surgery. The losses to USA and India have been very disappointing. We need to start considering players beyond those currently in the team,” Naqvi remarked after the defeat to India.

Naqvi also indicated that discussions are ongoing and refrained from elaborating further on potential changes within the team’s leadership structure at this critical juncture.
