The first-ever Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand ended in disappointment as rain forced the game to be called off without a single ball bowled. This marked only the eighth instance in Test history where no play occurred, and the first since 1998.
Weather Forces Abandonment After Four Days of No Play
After four days of no play, heavy rain on the last two days led the umpires to abandon the match by 8:45 AM on the fifth day. Persistent rain and adverse conditions at the Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground, including low-hanging clouds and water pooling near the boundary, confirmed the game’s cancellation.
Concerns and Preparations Fail to Prevent Abandonment
Concerns about the weather were evident before the match began. Although sunny conditions prevailed during playing hours, the outfield remained unprepared on the first two days, preventing any play. The only cricket activity was a brief practice session for New Zealand on the second afternoon. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) attributed the disruption to unseasonal rain, with Greater Noida receiving over 1200mm in the past week.
Future Fixtures and Impact on Teams
Afghanistan will now shift focus to a three-match ODI series against South Africa in Sharjah. New Zealand will travel to Sri Lanka for two Tests as part of the World Test Championship and then head to India for a three-Test series. Although the Greater Noida Test did not count towards the WTC, New Zealand aimed to use it to acclimate to subcontinental conditions. However, rain ruined those plans.
