Afghanistan appoints R Sridhar as assistant coach

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed R Sridhar as their assistant coach for the upcoming series against New Zealand and South Africa. Sridhar, who served as India’s fielding coach from 2014 to 2021 under Ravi Shastri, brings a wealth of experience to the Afghan team.

Afghanistan’s team, currently coached by former England batter Jonathan Trott, will first play a one-off Test against New Zealand in Noida, starting on September 9. This will be followed by three ODIs against South Africa in Sharjah, beginning on September 18.

Sridhar, 54, is a former left-arm spinner who represented Hyderabad in the Indian domestic circuit during the 1990s. He transitioned to coaching in 2001 and has since built an impressive resume. He has worked at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, with India Under-19s at the 2014 World Cup, and with Kings XI Punjab in the IPL, before his long tenure with India’s senior team. R Sridhar is also a Level-3 certified coach, indicating a high level of expertise.

The ACB mentioned that Sridhar’s current role could potentially extend into a long-term contract, depending on the results and future needs of the team. This appointment signals Afghanistan’s intent to strengthen their coaching staff as they prepare for challenging upcoming series.
