Rehan Ahmed recalled as England prepare for tricky pitch in Pakistan series decider

England is set to field a three-pronged spin attack on a Rawalpindi pitch, which Harry Brook described as being “raked” by local groundstaff to favor Pakistan’s spinners. Rehan Ahmed has been recalled to join Shoaib Bashir and Jack Leach, while Gus Atkinson also returns to the squad. Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts will sit out the second Test.

Rehan, last playing for England in February, will be the crucial third spin option. The dry, turning Rawalpindi pitch may heavily influence the game. Pakistan prepared the surface using rakes, fans, and heaters to aid their spinners. Brook hopes it plays like a typical Pakistani pitch—good for batting early on. He expects the pitch to provide some turn in the later stages of the match.

England’s spin-heavy approach is risky, with only Atkinson and Stokes as fast-bowling options. Rawalpindi traditionally favors seamers, making this decision bold. However, the venue is also known for high-scoring games. England previously scored 657 in 101 overs here two years ago. This history adds intrigue to their strategy.

Brook struggled against Pakistan’s spinners in the second Test and expects Sajid Khan and Noman Ali to play a crucial role in Rawalpindi. He’s worked on game plans with teammates, hoping for a better showing this time.

Rehan, who made his international debut in Pakistan two years ago, has had a mixed run of form. Despite a challenging summer, England remains confident in his potential. He is expected to bolster the lower order batting lineup at No. 9.
