Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as India’s T20I captain for the Sri Lanka series, marking a new era following the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from T20Is. Known as SKY, Yadav has quickly risen in prominence since his debut for India in 2021. Behind his success is his childhood coach, Ashok Aswalkar, whom Yadav has often praised.

Recently, Aswalkar revealed he lost his job at the BARC ground, where he had been employed since 1989-90. He started with a monthly salary of Rs 3000, which had increased to Rs 26,000 for his role as a groundsman and Rs 15,000 for coaching by the time he was let go in December 2023.
“I joined the BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) ground in 1989-90, assisting Jagannath Phanse as a groundsman and coach. When they (ASMC) discontinued my services in December 2023, I was getting Rs. 26,000 per month for the groundsman job and Rs. 15,000 for coaching from a coaching agency,” Aswalkar explained.
He added that he had not informed his family about losing his job but confided in Suryakumar Yadav, who, in response, stopped interacting with the person responsible for Aswalkar’s dismissal.
“I didn’t even tell my family members that I had lost my job. I just messaged Surya to say that I lost my job and told him who was responsible for the damage. Surya, in response, stopped entertaining that particular person.”
However, the head of the organization claimed Aswalkar’s removal was due to a misunderstanding. They expressed willingness to reinstate him. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold. There is hope Aswalkar will receive the recognition and support he deserves.
