Purdue basketball secured its first road win of the season with an 81-61 victory over Minnesota at Williams Arena on Thursday, with an unexpected contributor stepping up in a key moment.
Coach Matt Painter had emphasized that the Boilermakers needed to find their rhythm on the road, and though the game wasn’t flawless, Purdue managed to deliver a much-needed win. Caleb Furst, the lone senior on the roster, made his first start in two seasons and delivered a solid all-around performance. Not only did he bolster the team’s defense, but he also provided timely scoring, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds, and an assist. Furst’s contribution helped guide Purdue (10-4, 2-1 Big Ten) past the Gophers.
Star Players Step Up Amid Early Struggles
Braden Smith, who had a career-high 34 points in Purdue’s previous game, was off to a rough start in this contest. Though he scored his 1,000th career point on a clutch three-pointer midway through the first half, Smith struggled to find his shot, finishing the first 20 minutes 0 for 6 from the field. Despite his shooting woes, Smith shifted his focus to playmaking, finishing the game with 20 points, 10 assists, and 6 rebounds.
While Smith struggled, his fellow juniors, Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn, stepped up in a big way. Loyer, with the Gophers giving him respect for his long-range shooting, made the most of the attention, finding success with mid-range jumpers. He finished with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Kaufman-Renn, though limited by foul trouble, contributed 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting in 27 minutes.
Purdue’s Offense Comes to Life
After a slow start, Purdue’s offense came to life in the second half. Cam Heide, who had been struggling with his shooting, found some fortune in his hometown. His three-pointer bounced off the front rim, rolled over, and banked in, giving Purdue a 39-35 lead. That sparked a 7-0 run that shifted momentum in favor of the Boilermakers.
Smith found his shooting stroke later, hitting a crucial three-pointer to extend the lead, sending Purdue on a path to pull away from Minnesota in the latter stages of the game.
New Starting Lineup
In a move to jump-start Purdue’s Big Ten play, Matt Painter made changes to the starting lineup. Furst earned his first start since February 2023, and freshman guard C.J. Cox also made his first career start. This adjustment came after the Boilermakers had used the same lineup in all 39 games of last season but had already used four different lineups in their first 14 games this year.
