Netherlands Clinch Back-to-Back Paralympic Gold in Dominant Wheelchair Basketball Final

In a captivating showdown at the Bercy Arena, the Netherlands claimed Paralympic gold in wheelchair basketball, defeating the United States 63-49. Loughborough Lightning’s star playmaker, Kramer, led the charge with an impressive 23 points, guiding her team to a historic victory.

The final began with intense competition, as the Dutch faced an early 8-1 deficit. However, Kramer’s brilliance on the court soon became apparent. The 25-year-old came alive in the third quarter, orchestrating the Dutch offense and showing why many consider her one of the top players in the sport. Her relentless drive and playmaking abilities turned the tide, allowing the Netherlands to establish their dominance after a tight first half.

Kramer’s performance was pivotal as she continually threatened the American defense, demonstrating to the world why many regard her so highly in wheelchair basketball. Her leadership helped the Netherlands extend their lead in the final quarter, securing a comfortable victory and earning the team their second consecutive Paralympic gold, following their triumph in Tokyo 2020.

Reflecting on the win, Kramer acknowledged the tough start but emphasized the team’s resilience. “It was a rough start, and we had a bit of trouble getting the ball to the net in the first few minutes,” she admitted. “But before the game, we decided as a team what we were going to do in attack and defense, and we believed that if we stuck to our plan, we could win.

“We were nervous at first—I was very nervous—but we kept playing our game and didn’t change anything because of America. Slowly, things started working in our favor, they missed some shots, and at halftime, we reminded ourselves that we had 40 minutes to keep fighting. We made our move in the third quarter, and now I have a gold medal around my neck for the second time in a row.”

The victory capped off a flawless campaign for the Dutch team, who remained unbeaten throughout the pool stages and knockout rounds. Their cohesion, skill, and determination were evident as they cruised to the top of the Paralympic podium once again, solidifying their status as the world’s best in wheelchair basketball.
