Rytas Vilnius has reclaimed their place at the pinnacle of Lithuanian basketball, capturing their 7th Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) title by defeating Zalgiris Kaunas in a thrilling finals series. Rytas clinched the championship with a dramatic 88-87 victory in Game 4, concluding the best of five series with a decisive 3-1 win.
This triumph marks Rytas’ return to Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) supremacy after a one year hiatus. The previous season saw Zalgiris Kaunas, who had previously won 11 consecutive championships from 2010-11 to the 2021-22 season, take the title with a narrow 3-2 series win. Rytas’ victory interrupts Zalgiris’ dominance and restores their place as champions.
The decisive Game 4 saw Rytas’ stand out performer, Marcus Foster, lead his team to victory. Foster delivered an exceptional performance, scoring a game high 33 points, including six three pointers from seven attempts. His game winning layup with just 7.7 seconds remaining secured the championship for Rytas.
Since the Lithuanian Basketball League’s (LKL’s) inception, only two teams have won the league title: Zalgiris Kaunas. With a record 24 championships, and Rytas Vilnius, now with seven. This win reaffirms Rytas’ status as a formidable force in Lithuanian basketball and ends Zalgiris’ long standing streak of dominance.
