Jason Behrendorff has announced his retirement from state cricket after a 16-year career with Western Australia (WA). However, he will continue playing in T20 franchise leagues, where he has found success.
Behrendorff, who turns 35 in April, remains available for national selection, having played 17 T20Is and 12 ODIs between 2019 and 2022. His retirement follows his departure from Perth Scorchers, where he won four BBL titles and finished as the league’s leading wicket-taker last season. He has since signed a three-year deal with Melbourne Renegades.
Reflecting on his career, Behrendorff said, “It is the end of one chapter which has been a really exciting one. Playing state cricket and representing Australia has been a childhood dream come true.”
Born in Canberra, he joined WA at 19 and became a key bowler across formats. He won five One-Day Cup titles and took 75 List A wickets, ranking fifth on WA’s all-time list. In first-class cricket, he claimed 126 wickets at 23.85 but retired from red-ball cricket in 2017-18 due to back injuries. His 9 for 37 against Victoria in 2017 remains one of the best Shield performances.
Behrendorff’s international highlight came in the 2019 World Cup when he took a five-wicket haul against England at Lord’s. Though he had stints with Mumbai Indians in the IPL, a last-minute leg injury ruled him out of the 2023 season.
Now, he plans to focus on family life. “I want to be home and present for my kids, do school drop-offs, and spend more time with my wife,” he said.
