Burgess began his cricket journey through Surrey’s age-group system and later earned a degree in Sports and Exercise Science at Loughborough. After debuting for Leicestershire in 2016, he moved to Sussex before joining Warwickshire, where he made significant contributions. At Warwickshire, Burgess scored over 3,000 runs in 65 first-class matches, including a career-high 178 runs against Surrey in 2022. He played a key role in Warwickshire’s 2021 County Championship title and the Bob Willis Trophy victory. Last season, he scored 745 runs at an average of 43.82 and hit two red-ball centuries.

In a statement, Burgess expressed that the decision to retire was difficult but necessary, thanking the Warwickshire members, fans, and the club for their unwavering support during his six years with them. He highlighted his 2021 County Championship win as one of the most special moments of his career.

Warwickshire’s performance director, Gavin Larsen, expressed disappointment at the loss of a player with Burgess’ experience, praising his resilience with the bat and his skills as a wicketkeeper. Despite the setback, the club is preparing to reinforce its squad ahead of the 2025 season, following the departures of several key players, including Will Rhodes, Chris Benjamin, and Liam Norwell.
