Hardik Pandya faced two major setbacks on Friday—one in his personal life and another in his professional career. Suryakumar Yadav was chosen over Hardik Pandya to become India’s T20I captain. Additionally, Pandya announced his separation from Serbian model Natasa Stankovic.

Following India’s disappointing exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup, the selectors appointed Hardik Pandya as T20I captain, moving past Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul. However, they quickly reinstated Rohit Sharma as T20I captain. This decision paid off, as India secured an ICC title after 11 years.
After the 2024 T20 World Cup final, Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement, seemingly opening the door for Hardik Pandya to become the next T20I captain. However, the national selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir opted for Suryakumar Yadav instead.
According to a report from the Hindustan Times, Gautam Gambhir wants the injury-prone all-rounder to be ready to bowl his full quota of 10 overs in ODI cricket. A BCCI official mentioned that Gambhir reminded Hardik Pandya of this during a call.
Pandya, who last played an ODI during the 2023 World Cup, has requested a break for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, though he will participate in the T20I series.
