David Warner is back in a leadership role as he takes over as captain of the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. Cricket Australia (CA) recently lifted Warner’s six-year captaincy ban, imposed after the 2018 Sandpaper scandal in South Africa, allowing him to lead once again. After retiring from international cricket, Warner now focuses on guiding the Thunder to success in the BBL.

The decision to lift the ban came through Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct Commission, which ruled Warner eligible to captain the Thunder in the new season. Warner previously led the Thunder and expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the captaincy. “Captaining the Thunder again means a lot to me,” Warner said. “I was part of the team from the start, and being back with the ‘C’ next to my name feels fantastic. I’m looking forward to leading from the front and sharing my experience with the young talent coming through.”
Meanwhile, David Warner has hinted at a possible international comeback. He recently expressed willingness to return if Australia struggles to find a stable opener for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series against India. Since Warner’s retirement, Australia tried Steve Smith at the top, but he eventually moved back to his usual number 4 position. This leaves Usman Khawaja as the main opener, and Warner has indirectly indicated he would be ready to step in if needed.
The Delhi Capitals recently released Warner ahead of the upcoming IPL mega auction. Warner stepped in as captain for the Capitals in 2023 during Rishabh Pant’s absence and built a strong IPL record. Teams are expected to show significant interest in him during the auction.
