Joe Root Becomes No. 1 Test Batter, Replacing Kane Williamson in ICC Rankings

In a major shift in the ICC Test batting rankings 2024, Joe Root has ascended to the No. 1 spot for Test batters, dethroning Kane Williamson. This development was confirmed on Wednesday, marking a significant moment for English cricket.

Joe Root Becomes No. 1 Test Batter, Replacing Kane Williamson in ICC Rankings

Root’s rise to the top follows a series of impressive performances in England’s recent Test series against the West Indies. A standout moment was his remarkable innings in the second Test, where he scored 122 runs off 178 balls, securing his 32nd Test century. This innings, featuring 10 boundaries, highlighted Root’s exceptional skill and consistency in the longest format of the game.

With this stellar performance, Joe Root’s ICC Test batting rating surged to 872 points, surpassing Williamson’s 859 points. Root’s consistent big scores and dedication have propelled him to the top of the rankings, earning him an additional 12 rating points. This climb underscores his remarkable performance and commitment to the game.

As a result of Root’s climb, Kane Williamson, who previously held the top spot, now finds himself in second place. The competition for the top position remains intense, with Pakistan’s Babar Azam closely trailing in third place with 768 points.

The latest ICC cricket rankings reflect these changes, showcasing the ongoing battles at the summit of Test cricket. The shift underscores Joe Root’s dominance and the fierce competition among the world’s best Test batters.
