Chief selector Ajit Agarkar defended the contentious decision to include Hardik Pandya in India’s T20 World Cup squad. Emphasizing the unique value the dynamic all-rounder brings to the team and the balance he provides when fit.
Despite enduring a challenging IPL season as captain of the Mumbai Indians, Pandya secured a spot in the Indian squad for the upcoming tournament and was appointed vice-captain, a move that raised eyebrows across the cricketing community.
Pandya’s last appearance for India was during the ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh in October 2023.
Addressing concerns over Pandya’s selection and vice-captaincy, Agarkar clarified, “Nothing was discussed on vice-captaincy. He has played all games so far for Mumbai Indians. We have a month and a little bit before our first game. As long as he is fit, there is no replacement for what he can do.”

Agarkar stressed Pandya’s integral role in the team’s balance, particularly highlighting his bowling capabilities as a valuable asset for captain Rohit Sharma.
“Coming after a longish layoff, we are hopeful he’s working on it. Especially the way he bowls, he’ll give Rohit a lot of balance and options,” Agarkar added.
Pandya had recovered from an ankle injury in time for IPL 2024 and assumed the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians, replacing Rohit. A decision that faced considerable criticism.
