Ex-Pakistan Captain Saeed Ahmed Passes Away at Age 86

Pakistani cricket is in mourning following the passing of legendary former captain and allrounder Saeed Ahmed at the age of 86. Saeed Ahmed: A Look Back at the Career of a Pakistani Cricket Great

Pakistan Cricket Legend Saeed Ahmed Dies at 86

Saeed Ahmed Passes Away

Born in Jalandhar in 1937, Saeed carved a niche for himself in cricket history, representing Pakistan in 41 Test matches between 1958 and 1973. He briefly held the captaincy reins, leading the team in three drawn Tests against England in 1969, succeeding Hanif Mohammad.

Elegant Batsman and Off-Spin Allrounder: Remembering Saeed Ahmed

Renowned for his elegant batting style and expertise as an off-spinner, Saeed amassed 2991 Test runs, including five centuries. Three of those centuries came against arch-rivals India, showcasing his dominance against a familiar foe. He also snagged 22 wickets in Test matches, contributing with both bat and ball.

A Promising Start and Commendable Record

Making his debut at a young age of 20 against the West Indies, Saeed’s talent shone through early on. A crucial partnership with Hanif Mohammad in a memorable drawn Test in Bridgetown marked his arrival on the big stage. His graceful batting and effortless drives quickly propelled him to prominence at the highest level.

Despite Pakistan facing challenges in Test cricket during his era, Saeed maintained a commendable batting average of 40.01.

A Career Cut Short by Controversy

However, a disagreement with Dennis Lillee during Pakistan’s 1972 tour of Australia cast a shadow over his career. A disciplinary issue led to him being sent home, effectively ending his international career.

A Secluded Life After Retirement

Following his retirement, Saeed opted to distance himself from the sport, choosing a life of privacy in Lahore. Despite his contributions to Pakistani cricket, he remained out of the limelight.

The End of an Era in Pakistani Cricket

Survived by his two sons, a daughter, and his half-brother Younis Ahmed, who also played for Pakistan, Saeed’s passing marks the end of an era. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed condolences, acknowledging his significant contributions to the national team.

Saeed Ahmed’s legacy will be remembered by fans for his elegant batting and valuable all-round contributions.
