In a dramatic turn of events at Hobart, Tasmania, Caleb Jewell and Charlie Wakim spearheaded Tasmania’s resurgence against Western Australia, positioning themselves favorably for a shot at a home final in the Sheffield Shield.
Following a lackluster start that witnessed Tasmania’s dismissal for a mere 183 on day one, they rallied on day two, claiming six crucial wickets to restrict Western Australia to 271 all out. By stumps, Tasmania had reached a promising 174 for 2 in their second innings.

The situation appeared dire when Tasmania’s opener Tim Ward suffered a dismissal for a duck in the opening over, continuing his run of misfortune from the first innings. However, Jewell, enjoying his best performance of the season, capitalized on a dropped chance early in his innings and went on to compile a magnificent score. His impressive knock, adorned with 14 boundaries and two sixes off 101 deliveries, positioned him on the brink of his sixth first-class century and the first of the season.
Jewell found a solid ally in Wakim, as the duo stitched together a formidable 170-run partnership for the second wicket, shifting the momentum firmly in Tasmania’s favor. Despite Wakim’s untimely dismissal just moments before stumps, Tasmania managed to pile on 150 runs in the final session, securing an 86-run lead with eight wickets in hand going into day three, with Jordan Silk partnering Jewell at the crease.
Earlier in the day, Joel Paris led Western Australia’s lower order resistance with an unbeaten 40, enabling them to secure a first-innings lead of 88 runs. However, Tasmania’s Beau Webster and Riley Meredith emerged as the chief tormentors with the ball, limiting Western Australia’s scoring opportunities. Jayden Goodwin of Western Australia fell agonizingly short of a maiden first-class century, being dismissed for 85 by Meredith.
As the contest intensifies, Tasmania finds themselves in a commanding position, driven by Jewell and Wakim’s heroics, as they strive to clinch a crucial victory and secure their place in the coveted home final.
