Coco Gauff and coach Brad Gilbert have decided to part ways after a successful year-long partnership, both announced via social-media. The split comes just over two weeks after Gauff’s title defense at the U.S. Open ended in disappointment.

Gauff, who recently dropped from No.3 to No.6 in the WTA rankings, faced a challenging fourth-round exit at the U.S. Open. On September 1, she was defeated by Emma Navarro with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, struggling with 19 double-faults throughout the match. This loss was part of a string of recent setbacks for the 20-year-old American.

The partnership between Gauff and Gilbert began following a first-round exit at Wimbledon last season and quickly bore fruit. Under their guidance, Gauff enjoyed a remarkable 2023, claiming titles at Washington, Cincinnati, and the U.S. Open—the latter being her first Grand Slam victory. Gilbert, who previously coached notable players like Andre Agassi, Andy Murray, and Andy Roddick, expressed gratitude for the “amazing summer run in 2023” and wished Gauff well in her future endeavors.

Gauff, in her message, praised Gilbert for their successful run and wished him the best in his next coaching chapter. Their tenure also included notable semifinal appearances at the Australian Open and the French Open. Where Gauff lost to the eventual champions in both tournaments.

Despite their achievements, the partnership faced challenges, including a contentious fourth-round exit at Wimbledon against Navarro. During that match, Gauff expressed a desire for more direction, highlighting some disagreements with Gilbert over game strategy.

Additionally, Gauff’s performance at the Paris Olympics was less than stellar, with exits in both singles and doubles events after a promising start as the U.S. flag bearer.

As Gauff transitions away from Gilbert’s coaching, she looks ahead to future with a focus on regaining her top form. The end of this coaching chapter marks a new phase for the rising star, who continues to be a significant force in women’s tennis.
