In the opening round of men’s singles at the Australian Open 2024, Sumit Nagal from India achieved a remarkable victory, defeating Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik with an impressive score of 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(5). This accomplishment holds historical significance as Nagal becomes the first Indian since Ramesh Krishnan in 1989 to triumph over a seeded player at a Grand Slam.
Progressing to the second round, Nagal is set to confront the winner between Mackenzie McDonald and Shang Juncheng. The win against World No. 31 Bublik signifies a significant milestone in Nagal’s tennis career.
Born on August 16, 1997, in Jhajjar, Haryana, Sumit Nagal initiated his tennis journey at the age of eight at a local sports club. Joining Mahesh Bhupathi’s training academy at ten, Nagal was part of the first batch of Mahesh Bhupathi’s Apollo Tyres Mission 2018 program. Following the program’s closure, he underwent training in Toronto under Coach Bobby Mahal.
Overcoming injuries, Nagal exhibited an impressive climb in the rankings, reaching 122 after being outside the top 500 last year. His stellar performance in the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open, where he didn’t drop a set in three matches, highlighted his excellent form.
Sumit Nagal, the last Indian to participate in the singles main draw of a Grand Slam at the 2021 Australian Open, received a singles wildcard at that time. In the 2020 US Open, he achieved another milestone as the first Indian in seven years to win a main draw match at a Grand Slam.
