Novak Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International, an ATP 250 event, with a commanding 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gael Monfils on Thursday. This marked Djokovic’s 20th career win over the Frenchman, maintaining his flawless record against Monfils, who has yet to claim a victory over the Serbian in their 18-year professional rivalry.
The world No. 7, who has won 24 Grand Slam titles, was in control throughout the match, converting all three of his break points to wrap up the contest in just 72 minutes. The victory serves as an important step in Djokovic’s preparations for the upcoming Australian Open, where he is a 10-time champion.
Reflecting on their long-standing rivalry, Djokovic, 37, shared, “We’ve known each other since we were 15 and have played many times, both in juniors and on Tour. We’ve had some incredible battles. Gael is one of the best athletes in our sport, with incredible agility, flexibility, and speed.”
Next up for Djokovic is a semifinal clash with big-serving American Reilly Opelka as he aims for his 100th career singles title. Only Roger Federer (103) and Jimmy Connors have won more than 100 singles titles in men’s tennis history.
Djokovic’s quest for his 10th Australian Open crown begins on January 12 in Melbourne.
