India made history on June 29 by clinching their second T20 World Cup 2024 title against South Africa, joining West Indies and England as the most successful teams in the tournament’s prestigious history. The victory was not only significant for the team but also marked emotional farewells for senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who announced their retirements from T20I cricket on the same day. It was also the final day for Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach, ending his tenure which began on November 22.

Dravid, who led India to the 2023 World Cup final, came close to lifting the trophy previously but finally achieved it in his last match as coach. Known for his composed demeanor, Dravid was visibly emotional during the celebrations, a rare sight for the usually stoic coach. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a video capturing Dravid’s heartfelt farewell speech, where he thanked the players, coaching staff, and BCCI members for their support and respect throughout his tenure. He specifically acknowledged Rohit Sharma, expressing gratitude for convincing him to stay on when he considered stepping down.
The BCCI has yet to announce Rahul Dravid’s successor as head coach of the Indian cricket team. However, reports indicate that WV Raman and Gautam Gambhir are leading candidates, both having recently undergone interviews for the prestigious role. The transition marks a significant change for Indian cricket as they bid farewell to a successful coaching tenure under Dravid’s guidance.
