New Zealand reached the Women’s T20 World Cup final for the first time since 2010, defeating the West Indies by eight runs in a low-scoring thriller in Sharjah. With this victory, New Zealand will face South Africa, the 2023 runners-up, in the final, setting the stage for a potential first-time champion.
A Tough Start for New Zealand

Batting first, New Zealand struggled on a difficult pitch, finishing at 128 for 9. Deandra Dottin was the standout for the West Indies, taking 4 for 22. In their chase, West Indies got off to a shaky start, ending the powerplay at 25 for 2, with Eden Carson making early inroads by taking three wickets for 29 runs.
Dottin’s Efforts and West Indies’ Struggles
Despite Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor’s efforts, managing just 28 runs off 41 balls combined, the West Indies found themselves at 51 for 4. Dottin, however, ignited their innings with a quickfire 33 off 22 balls, hitting three sixes in an over. The equation came down to 34 runs needed from 24 balls, but Amelia Kerr, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, dismissed Dottin in the 17th over.
Bowlers Secure the Win for New Zealand
New Zealand’s bowlers held their nerve, despite dropping five catches in the field. Carson’s excellent performance and Dottin’s all-round brilliance made the match thrilling, but New Zealand’s ability to restrict the West Indies to 120 for 8 secured their place in the final. Ultimately, a late flourish from New Zealand helped them secure the win, allowing them to inch closer to their first T20 World Cup title.
