Rashid Khan was at a loss for words after Afghanistan clinched a dramatic victory over Bangladesh in Kingstown to secure their first-ever World Cup semi-final berth.

Afghanistan posted 115 for 5, and Rashid, along with Naveen-ul-Haq, took four wickets each to bowl out Bangladesh for 105, falling short of their revised target of 114 in 19 overs due to DLS method adjustments. This result also meant the end of the road for Bangladesh and Australia in the tournament.

Rashid Khan: 'Semi-Finals Are a Dream Come True'

“It’s like a dream come true for us as a team to reach the semi-finals,” Rashid expressed after the match. “Our journey began with a strong belief after defeating New Zealand. Words can’t describe how I feel right now, and back home, everyone is ecstatic about this achievement.”

“I remember telling Brian Lara at the welcome party that we wouldn’t disappoint him, and we’ve proven him right.”

Afghanistan only needed a win to advance to the knockout stage, while Bangladesh faced a daunting task of chasing down the target in 12.1 overs, which Afghanistan effectively capitalized on despite weather interruptions.

“We aimed for 130-135 on this pitch but fell 15-20 runs short,” Rashid reflected. “However, we had seen that 115 was competitive on this surface in previous matches. Our strategy was clear – we anticipated Bangladesh’s aggressive pursuit and capitalized on it.”

“When our bowlers hit their marks and bowled accurately, we knew we could bowl them out. Our focus was on giving our best effort for our country’s pride and happiness. Everyone contributed wonderfully to achieve this goal.”

Rashid also praised his fast bowlers, particularly Naveen-ul-Haq, named Player of the Match, and Fazalhaq Farooqi, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, for their early breakthroughs that set the tone.

“Their early strikes made our job easier,” Rashid emphasized. “In T20s, a strong start allows our spinners to dominate in the middle overs. Our fast bowlers’ skill and clarity in execution have been pivotal in our success so far.”

Naveen-ul-Haq described the victory as surreal and highlighted the team’s confidence despite challenging moments during the match.

“These games are unpredictable,” Naveen remarked. “One moment you feel the game slipping away, and the next, a wicket changes everything. We knew these pitches don’t yield high scores, so restricting runs and taking wickets were crucial. Fortunately, we executed our plans effectively.”
