British rowers Oliver Wynne-Griffiths and Tom George narrowly missed out on men’s pair rowing final gold, finishing with silver after a dramatic race. Wynne-Griffiths, from Wales, and George, from England, lost to Croatia’s Sinkovic brothers, who timed their row perfectly to clinch victory by just 0.45 seconds.

The British duo led for most of the 2,000m race but couldn’t fend off the powerful finish by Martin and Valent Sinkovic, who surged ahead in the last 20 meters and celebrated their Olympic title by diving into the water at the Vaires-sur-Marne rowing stadium.
Despite their initial disappointment, Wynne-Griffiths and George were all smiles when they received their silver medals. This medal adds to their Olympic success, following their Tokyo Olympics men’s eight bronze. It’s also Britain’s fifth rowing medal of the Paris Olympics.
Wynne-Griffiths and George aimed to become the first British champions in the men’s pair rowing event since Sir Steve Redgrave and Matt Pinsent in Atlanta 1996. They had an unbeaten 2024 season, including winning their first major title at the European Championships in April.
