Team GB Wins Silver in Men’s Team Sprint, Dutch Take Gold

Team GB’s sprinters secured a hard-fought silver medal in the Olympic Velodrome, but couldn’t prevent Harrie Lavreysen and the Netherlands from taking gold with a world-record time. In the final, the British trio of Jack Carlin, Hamish Turnbull, and Ed Lowe were valiant but outmatched by Lavreysen and his teammates, Jeffrey Hoogland and Roy van den Berg, who led from the start and finished with a time of 40.949 seconds.

Team GB’s sprint coach, Jason Kenny, acknowledged the Dutch dominance, stating that the team chose the best gears they could, hoping to be close if the Dutch made a mistake. Despite the Dutch team’s flawless execution, Carlin praised his team’s performance, recognizing their achievement against the world’s best.

Carlin highlighted the challenge of competing with two inexperienced teammates and overcoming his own injury, a broken ankle from April. Despite this, they delivered strong performances, defeating Germany in the first round and advancing to the gold medal race.

In other events, New Zealand, Italy, and Australia led the women’s team pursuit qualifiers, with the USA setting the second-fastest time. Team GB’s women, including Elinor Barker and Josie Knight, finished third-best, a solid performance in Katie Archibald’s absence.

The men’s pursuit team, reshuffled due to Dan Bigham’s training injury, narrowly defeated Denmark with a time just shy of the world record. Australia set a new world record, defeating Italy, and will face Team GB in the gold medal race, where another world record time will likely be needed to win.
