In a storybook finish at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, France’s Kauli Vaast, a local Tahitian surfer, claimed the gold medal in men’s surfing on Monday, August 5, at Teahupo’o, Tahiti.
The 22-year-old Vaast dazzled the crowd with a score of 17.67, outshining Australia’s Jack Robinson, who earned silver with 7.83. Brazil’s Gabriel Medina secured bronze with 15.54, improving on his fourth-place finish from Tokyo 2020.
Vaast’s victory added to a remarkable day for the host nation, which also saw Johanne Defay win bronze in the women’s competition.
Vaast, surfing on his home turf, dominated the final with just two waves. As the final began, anticipation built as the sun broke through the clouds and the anticipated swell rolled in. Vaast wasted no time, riding his first wave into a massive frontside barrel for a top score of 9.5. Robinson’s subsequent backside tube scored 7.83. Vaast then added an 8.17 on his second wave, and no other significant waves followed, leaving Robinson with no chance to catch up.
The final moments saw the crowd erupt in celebration as the clock ticked down, confirming Vaast’s gold medal. Vaast said, “Winning the Olympics at home on the best waves in the world is something special.” “It’s been a long and hard journey, but the support from the Polynesian people gave me incredible energy. It’s just insane. Best day of my life.”
Robinson, while proud of his silver, reflected on the emotional journey: “It’s super special to be here and have this moment. Standing on the podium, watching the flags, it was a lifetime achievement. I’m grateful for this opportunity, even though I didn’t come out on top.”

The local lifeguards and spectators celebrated Vaast’s triumph with tears and cheers. Moreover, Vaast was greeted with a flotilla of boats and jet skis as he made his way ashore. Additionally, French team coach Jeremy Flores led the celebrations, further enhancing the joyous atmosphere.
Earlier, Gabriel Medina redeemed himself in the bronze-medal match against Peru’s Alonso Correa. Medina, known for his impressive performances, scored a pair of 7.77’s, with one wave featuring the day’s most impressive tube and another showcasing a series of committed turns for a total of 15.54. Correa finished fourth with 12.43.
Medina, delighted with his bronze, shared his joy: “I’m thrilled to win this medal. Tokyo was close, but I gave it my all this time and achieved my goal. I’m proud to make my family and country proud.”
