Indian hockey legend PR Sreejesh has been named as the joint flag-bearer alongside shooter Manu Bhaker for the Closing Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics, scheduled for August 11. The announcement comes after the Indian men’s hockey team secured their second consecutive Olympic bronze medal on Thursday, adding to Sreejesh’s illustrious career.
Earlier in the week, they initially named 23-year-old pistol shooter Manu Bhaker as the flag-bearer. However, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) decided to honor Sreejesh for his outstanding contributions to Indian hockey and sports in general over more than two decades.
IOA President Dr. PT Usha described Sreejesh’s selection as both an emotional and popular choice, reflecting his long-standing dedication to Indian sports. “Sreejesh has admirably served Indian hockey and Indian sport as a whole,” she remarked.
Interestingly, they also considered Neeraj Chopra, the Paris 2024 silver medallist and javelin star, for the role. However, in a display of sportsmanship and respect, Chopra himself suggested that Sreejesh should be the co-flag bearer. “Ma’am, even if you had not asked me, I would have suggested Sree bhai’s name.” Chopra reportedly told PT Usha, showcasing the high regard he holds for Sreejesh.
At 36, PR Sreejesh has had an illustrious career, representing India in four Olympic Games. Following the bronze medal win in Paris, Sreejesh announced his retirement from the sport. Making this recognition at the Closing Ceremony a fitting tribute to his legacy.
Manu Bhaker, who made history by becoming the second Indian woman after PV Sindhu to win two Olympic medals. Will proudly carry the flag alongside Sreejesh. The duo follows in the footsteps of wrestler Bajrang Punia, who was India’s flag-bearer at the Tokyo 2020 Closing Ceremony.
The Closing Ceremony on August 11 will see Sree-jesh and Bhaker leading the Indian contingent. Symbolizing the spirit and achievements of Indian athletes at Paris 2024.
