The Indian men’s hockey team secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Spain to win the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking a fitting farewell for veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh in his final international match.

Spain initially took the lead with a penalty stroke from captain Marc Miralles in the 18th minute. However, India responded quickly, with captain Harmanpreet Singh scoring twice in the 30th and 33rd minutes, giving India the lead and eventually securing the win.
This victory at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium extended India’s record as the most successful hockey team in Olympic history, bringing their total to 13 medals, including their second consecutive bronze. This also marked the first time since 1972 that India has won back-to-back Olympic medals in hockey.
India, ranked fifth in the world, faced a tough challenge against eighth-ranked Spain, who had previously upset defending champions Belgium in the quarter-finals. Despite a cautious start, India gradually grew into the game, creating multiple opportunities in the Spanish half.
Sreejesh made several crucial saves, especially in the final quarter, to maintain India’s slim lead. Spain’s attempts to equalize were thwarted, including a disallowed goal due to a handball.
After the match, Harmanpreet Singh expressed pride in the team’s achievement, highlighting the significance of winning consecutive medals and honoring Sreejesh’s contributions. The victory added another historic chapter to India’s Olympic hockey success.
