The men’s hockey tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics delivered a day of nail-biting action and exceptional skill at the historic Yves-du-Manoir Stadium on July 30. Spectators were treated to high-stakes matches, including a dramatic rematch of the Tokyo 2020 final between Belgium and Australia.
Belgium, known as the Red Lions, lived up to their fierce reputation by dismantling the Australian defense with a commanding 6-2 victory. However, it was the clash between Spain and host nation France that truly stole the show.
GAME OF THE DAY: SPAIN VS. FRANCE
France entered the match eager to recover from heavy defeats to Germany and the Netherlands, while Spain aimed to climb the standings in Pool A. The host nation started strong, with Timothee Clement scoring two goals in the first period. Despite a valiant defense, France saw their lead cut in half by a goal from Alvaro Iglesias by the end of the second period.
Spain equalized early in the third period through Rafael Vilallonga. Yet, the game continued to swing as Victor Charlet netted a penalty corner at the end of the third period to restore France’s lead. Spain’s relentless attack paid off once more in the fourth period when Pepe Cunill scored from a penalty corner, resulting in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
“We knew it was an important game for us,” said Clement. “After two games, we had lost two games. So the (hot conditions) were difficult, but we showed our ability today to improve our game.”
Both teams now have a rest day before their next matches on August 1, with France facing Great Britain and Spain taking on South Africa.

PLAYERS OF THE DAY
Belgium’s Tom Boon was the standout scorer, netting two penalty corners and a field goal to achieve a hat-trick against Australia.
India’s captain Harmanpreet Singh showcased his leadership by scoring both goals in their 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland.
Germany’s Gonzalo Peillat and Great Britain’s Lee Morton displayed exceptional accuracy, each scoring two of their three shots on goal to lead their teams to victory.
“I don’t score many,” Morton said. “It’s my first Olympic goal – and I get to score two. I was chatting with family before and they all said, ‘We’re feeling a goal today’. So maybe if we keep saying that every game, we will keep it going.”
Goalkeepers Sreejesh Parattu Raveendran of India and Tomas Santiago of Argentina were flawless, each making five crucial saves to secure shut-out victories for their teams.
