Indian wrestler Nisha Dahiya demonstrated incredible resilience, fighting through severe pain and injury, but ultimately lost her quarter-final match in the women’s 68kg wrestling division at the Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling on Monday. The 25-year-old, with heavy strappings on her right hand, faced 18-year-old Pak Sol Gum wrestling from North Korea and narrowly lost 10-8.

Despite an early 8-2 lead and a strong start, Nisha Dahiya wrestling had to take medical timeouts due to her injured hand. Switching to a defensive strategy to maintain her advantage, she could not hold off Pak Sol Gum, who scored eight consecutive points to win the bout and advance to the semi-finals. Pak Sol Gum later lost to the USA’s Amit Elor, ending Nisha Dahiya’s chances for a bronze medal through the repechage round.
Nisha, a silver medallist at the 2023 Asian Championships, was taken for a scan post-match, revealing a severe shoulder injury. Further tests will determine her treatment plan, according to the Indian Olympic Association.
In her opening match, Nisha Dahiya secured a dramatic 6-4 victory against fifth-seeded Tetiana Rizhko of Ukraine. She initially led with a point but trailed 4-1 after the first round. She then scored two points within ten seconds in the second round, equalized at 4-4, and clinched the win with 11 seconds remaining.
Vinesh Phogat, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, will begin her campaign in the women’s 50kg category on Tuesday. Six Indian Olympic wrestlers 2024 are competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
