Australia gave it their all during the nine-day Paris 2024 swimming results competition, coming close to surpassing the United States for the most gold medals in swimming. However, the U.S. clinched the final victory, extending their lead.

On the last day, the U.S. added two more gold medals. Bobby Finke gold medal won the men’s 1500m freestyle, setting a world record, and the American women’s team—Regan Smith, Lilly King, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske—secured gold in the women’s 4x100m medley relay Paris 2024, also setting a world record. These victories brought the U.S. total to eight gold medals, surpassing Australia’s seven.
Australia earned two silver medals on the final day at La Defense Arena, with Meg Harris silver medal in the women’s 50m freestyle and the women’s medley relay team finishing second. Despite a strong performance, Australia fell short of topping the gold medal count.
The U.S. swimming world records and Australia rivalry was a major storyline throughout the competition. Walsh, who swam the butterfly leg of the medley relay, praised Finke’s performance, which energized the team. Finke, who won the last individual men’s race, was determined to secure gold, driven by the pressure of being the final swimmer.
Australia’s Kaylee McKeown swimming gold, who won two of her country’s seven gold medals, expressed pride in the team’s overall performance. The United States dominated with a total of 28 medals, while Australia earned 18.
