Anush Agarwalla, the lone Indian equestrian at the Paris 2024 Olympics, did not advance to the medal round in the individual dressage event on Wednesday. Competing at the iconic Château de Versailles venue in Île-de-France, the 24-year-old made history as the first Indian to participate in an Olympic dressage event.
While India has had representation in equestrian sports at the Olympics before, all previous athletes competed in eventing. Notable predecessors include Fouaad Mirza (Tokyo 2020), Imtiaz Anees (Sydney 2000), Indrajit Lamba (Atlanta 1996), and the team of Jitendrajit Singh Ahluwalia, Hussain Singh, Mohammed Khan, and Darya Singh (Moscow 1980).
In dressage, horse and rider perform a series of intricate movements in a marked arena, judged on precision, smoothness, and overall performance. For Paris 2024, the dressage qualifiers divided competitors into six groups of ten. The top two from each group, along with the next six highest scorers, advanced to the final Grand Prix Freestyle.
Agarwalla and his horse Sir Caramello Old competed in Group E, finishing ninth out of ten with a score of 66.444%. Despite a valiant effort, it was not enough to progress to the next stage.
Agarwalla’s journey to Paris was marked by significant achievements. Last year, riding Etro, he won India’s first individual medal in dressage at the Asian Games, taking bronze, and also contributed to India’s gold in team dressage in Hangzhou. He earned his Olympic berth by meeting the Minimum Eligibility Requirement (MER) four times during the qualifying period.
